Australian "Year of the MOUSE" (sometimes called the "Year of the Rat") gold and silver coins were minted in 2008 by the Perth Mint.  The Perth Mint is the official Australian government mint.

First minted in 1999 the Lunar "Silver" coin Series lasted for 12 years. This coin series, is now called series I.  It commemorates each one of the twelve Chinese lunar years with the official lunar calendar animal.

2008 is the Chinese lunar "Year of the Mouse". Both silver and gold Mouse series I coins were minted by the Australian government.

The design changed yearly to match the Chinese Year of the Animal.  This 12 year silver coin series ended in 2010 with the Year of the Tiger coins.
